The Shadow Communicator Phenomenon
We spend so much time talking about official comms teams, authorized spokespeople, approved messaging… but there’s this whole parallel universe of communicators in our organizations who are shaping perceptions every single day.
I’m talking about that medical affairs colleague who’s become the go-to voice at scientific conferences. The regulatory person who’s built relationships with policy makers. The patient advocacy lead who’s cultivated their own disease community contacts. These shadow communicators – they’re everywhere, and they’re powerful.
Here’s what’s fascinating though – instead of seeing this as territory to defend, what if we saw it as an orchestra to conduct? These colleagues aren’t trying to undermine corporate affairs. They’re passionate about their work and want to share it with the world. The real opportunity is figuring out how we help them hit the right notes while keeping the whole organization in harmony.
So here’s my question for all of you: How are you working with your shadow communicators? Are you trying to control them, or are you finding ways to amplify their expertise while maintaining strategic coherence? Because I’m starting to think the future of corporate affairs isn’t about owning all the microphones – it’s about knowing when to pass them around and when to turn up the volume.
