Panel Discussion: When Purpose Becomes Practice

Purpose is easy to articulate. Turning it into choices that create lasting value for employees, communities, and the business is more complicated. Where should a company focus? Who should help shape the agenda? What makes a partnership genuinely useful to the community rather than simply visible? And how do you sustain that commitment as business priorities, leadership, and resources change?

Taking place as the global healthcare industry gathers in London for Jefferies week, this conversation will look at how life sciences organisations translate values into sustained community engagement and social impact — and how that engagement can create long-term value for both communities and the organisations investing in them. Leaders from industry, the nonprofit sector, and the local community will explore how strong partnerships are built, how companies connect global commitments to local needs, and what it takes to make purpose part of how an organisation operates rather than an occasional activation.

Key Takeaways:

  • Focus community investment where it can create meaningful, long-term value, considering local needs, organisational capabilities, employee engagement, and the company’s broader business and geographic footprint.
  • Build stronger partnerships with nonprofits, community organisations, and public-sector stakeholders by involving partners early and designing around what communities actually need.
  • Connect global values to local action while giving individual markets and communities enough latitude to define what meaningful engagement looks like for them.
  • Sustain social-impact efforts through changing business priorities and evaluate whether programmes are creating value for communities, employees, and the organisation beyond participation numbers or visibility.
  • Use moments when the industry comes together to contribute to the places hosting it, creating a broader role for major convenings beyond meetings, transactions, and networking.
