Embargoes have long been part of biotech communications. They give reporters time to thoroughly review complex scientific data, interview experts, and produce more thoughtful reporting when news breaks. But one recent experience on a Phase 3 clinical data announcement made us ask an important question:
When a reporter accepts an embargo, what exactly are they agreeing to?
The answer, it turns out, isn’t nearly as universal as many communications professionals assume. To better understand expectations, Ticket to Biotech surveyed 18 communications professionals working across biotech and healthcare communications. While the sample size is modest, the responses reveal an important conversation our industry should be having.
